Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1996-05-21

I do not expect him to tell me the details this morning, but perhaps he could give me an answer to my question later today. Exactly what firearms, which can at present be held legally in the Northern Territory, will be banned by the proposals about to be adopted from the national police ministers' meeting? Further, what firearms, which can now be held legally in the Northern Territory, will be prohibited with certain exceptions?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I can provide most of the answer to the member this morning. No firearms that have been legal are to be banned. We have always banned automatic firearms. New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania have to move to ban weapons that have long gone in the Territory.

Changes will occur with the prohibited weapons that fall within the new categories C and D. Those prohibitions will come into play when the legislation is introduced into this parliament. In the interim, firearms that are ultimately to be prohibited remain legal in the hands of those people who have them. If they are licensed shooters who have registered firearms, there will be no change until that legislation is introduced. Firearms to be prohibited, except for occupational use or restricted use, will be the self-loading shotguns, pump-action shotguns and .22 semi-automatic rimfires that have moved from category B to category C. In the interim, people who are looking forward to the geese and duck seasons remain legitimately licensed shooters.
