Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BALDWIN - 1996-08-20

Are there any plans for the forthcoming expansion of utilities into the Territory's important and developing rural areas?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I am very pleased to be able to respond to that question. I am very happy to be able to let the community know of the level of growth that is occurring in the rural areas

of the Territory. Obviously, to support that growth, it is necessary to provide energy. There are a number of areas around the Territory where, during this year, the Power and Water Authority will spend $2m on what can be described only as a community service obligation style of expansion. In other words, there will be no immediate return in a commercial sense for the type of investment involved. I will run through some of the areas that will be affected because I am sure the people who live in them will be pleased to hear what is to occur.

The area of Southport is being developed in the Darwin rural area. Many years ago, it was surveyed and divided into 1-acre blocks along the Blackmore River. At Southport, problems have been experienced with a lack of water. However, new development will include the establishment of a bore and installation of a 13.6 kL water storage tank to enable residents to source water. That was suggested by Southport residents as a sensible way to provide for them. This government is very pleased to be able to do that.

At Cox Peninsula - a growing area with considerable restrictions - over $280 000 will be spent to augment the public water supply available to the community. A 1 ML ground-level tank will be established and fencing to the spring area will be upgraded to prevent animals contaminating it. The result will be that more people there will be able to utilise the water provided by the government.

The 22 kV powerline will be extended 12 km to the Bark Hut Inn at a cost of, I believe, $0.3m. This work will allow for further extensions towards the Point Stuart area next year. This will enable more individuals and groups to utilise power and develop further, and by that means help the Territory to grow.

A $525 000, 21 km extension of the 22 kV powerline will be put in along Florina Road to enable producers and horticulturists to expand and produce more efficiently for both Territory consumption and for export. These are the sort of activities that have helped to create those impressive growth figures.

At Hamilton Downs, the well will be deepened and fitted with a solar pump/tank and $0.3m is provided for an extension to improve the power supply. At Oriama bush camp, $100 000 will be spent on power. Overall, the provision of electricity and water in outlying areas of the Territory will result in improved standards for Territorians and increased growth.
