Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BAILEY - 1997-02-18

In the previous question, we highlighted what the Country Liberal Party does before every election. I now ask the Chief Minister about what happens after every election. Isn't it true that, just 2 years after the election of 1990, which was called by Marshall Perron to oppose ATSIC, the then Chief Minister said: `We must further develop an increasingly productive relationship with ATSIC'? Isn't it true that he went on to say that his government would `work with ATSIC in a number of ways'? That was in November 1992. Isn't it also true that, in July and August, 2 years after the 1994 election, the CLP's Attorney-General pursued a national agenda of expanding customary law in the national legal system? That occurred despite the fact that, during the 1994 election campaign, the CLP had painted the exact same Labor position as the creation of 2 laws on the basis of race. Will the Chief Minister confirm that his scurrilous attack on the integrity of Aboriginal Territorians is aimed entirely at an election campaign?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, for the benefit of members opposite, I will table a copy of the Wicking cartoon.

Mr Bailey: You treat it as a joke.

Mr STONE: You are the joke.
