Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr RIOLI - 1994-08-31

One of the Territory's Commonwealth Games medallists, the Alice Springs boxer James Swan who returns to Darwin today, has said that he needs a job to enable him to continue training and fighting. Will the government help James to enable him to continue doing the Territory proud?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, usually, we do not discuss terms of employment across the floor of this Chamber. However, like the member for Arafura, I too read the article in the NT News that suggested that the Department of Sport and Recreation should find a job for James. I contacted my office on Monday and asked it to examine any areas in which we could utilise the services of James. I am as anxious as anybody to find something that will enable him to continue his training with the support of the government, as we have been assisting him since the early days. It is highly unlikely, of course, that we would employ him under the terms of the Public Sector Employment and Management Act unless there is a vacant position. However, I am quite sure that there are many areas, particularly in the Aboriginal recreational programs, where we could use him as a role model for the youth of the Territory. The department is examining those options.
