Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STIRLING - 1995-10-12

I am sure the minister is aware of his department's purchase of wheelchairs from Modular Medical products in 1992. Is there any documentary evidence in his department to support the member for Leanyer's statement that a number of schools had made direct approaches to the department for wheelchair resources? If there is, I ask which schools made requests. What documentary evidence exists in his department to identify which students needed wheelchairs prior to the purchase? What documentary evidence exists that forms the basis for assessments of which schools should receive wheelchairs? The member for Leanyer said that the wheelchairs were distributed to those schools that were assessed as having a need for them. Finally, was a certificate of exemption completed for this purchase and, if so, what documentary evidence was provided to support it as was required by the Supply and Tender Board?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, it is perhaps typical of the opposition that the first question I have received as Minister for Education and Training relates to a matter from some years ago. Obviously, the education system is working exceptionally well at the moment, and there are no controversies or disputes, otherwise I would have assumed that ...

Mr Stirling: I think you have a few problems there too.

Mr HATTON: ... the shadow spokesman would have asked somequestions associated with that. Be that as it may ...

Mr Stirling: I thought you would have brought on a statement by now. It is the third day of the sittings.

Mr HATTON: I said that this was the first question that you had asked in 2 sittings, but I will not go into that.

The member has asked for some fairly comprehensive and, in a sense, specific answers. He has asked whether there is any documentation in the Department of Education associated with this matter. I would hate to be accused of misleading the honourable member in relation to this. Therefore, I will take the opportunity to have the matter investigated properly by the department and I will report to the House at the earliest opportunity.
