Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr EDE - 1994-12-01

The minister would be aware that hundreds of thousands of hectares of Northern Territory pastoral land, much of it in the eastern part of my electorate, is included in the so-called 'poison country'. The minister would be aware also of the CSIRO's recent work to develop a means of overcoming the problems associated with the poison country, thereby bringing these lands into full pastoral utilisation. What is the minister's department doing to ensure that this technology is made available expeditiously to Northern Territory pastoralists?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I need to be briefed technically on what is involved in the Leader of the Opposition's question.

Mr Ede: It has been talked about extensively. It is the biggest breakthrough in ages for the gidgee country.

Mr PALMER: As I said, I will obtain a full technical brief on it for the Leader of the Opposition.
