Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr MITCHELL - 1995-10-18

Will the government allocate this week $500 000 for beautification programs throughout the Northern Territory?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I am very pleased to be able to confirm that councils will receive letters this week to confirm that funding will be provided for use in greening community areas. The funding is to be distributed as follows: $193 500 to Darwin, $58 000 to Litchfield, $65 000 to Palmerston, $53 000 to Katherine, $100 000 to Alice Springs, and $30 000 to Tennant Creek. The aim of this assistance is to encourage councils to continue their greening programs in order that the quality of life in the Territory is maintained.

Most Territorians are reasonably pleased with the environment in which they live. However, I encourage councils to pay a little more attention to parks in their control. I think the general community believes that councils should be involved in looking after parks, rubbish and dog control. Those are the kind of important issues that people want their councils to look after. Since 1991, the Territory government has provided over $11m for beautification

projects through the Department of Transport and Works, local government bodies and the Conservation Commission, to assist councils to maintain and improve the environment in which we live. I believe that councils should put more effort into those areas. It is very unlikely that councils elsewhere are subsidised by their state governments. However, this government is committed to ensuring that the environment in which we live and in which our children grow up improves continually.

Members of the opposition may not think that is a good idea. They may like to live on a piece of dirt in a browned-off area. That is fine. It is up to the opposition to present that to the community as their option. One of the reasons why they continue to sit on the opposition benches is that, every time there is an initiative that people in the community want to see happening, members opposite bag it. That is fine too. However, they may rest assured that we will continue to remind the community about the opposition's approach to everything, including the beautification of the environment in which we live.
