Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Ms MARTIN - 1995-11-22

Construction of the proposed `mother of all barrages' across Tommycut Creek has had to be abandoned. According to the minister, that is a result of early rains. Will the minister provide the parliament with full details of the project, including engineering specifications, tender documents and details of when the contract was signed? Will he tell us how much of the $350 000 allocated for the barrage has been wasted?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I want firstly to reject soundly the suggestion that the $350 000 to which the member referred has been wasted

Ms Martin: How much?

Mr REED: It has not been wasted. That suggestion epitomises the attitude of members opposite. Many of the answers to the questions that the member for Fannie Bay asked are in the Parliamentary Record. They were provided during the course of the last sittings and in the announcement that I made regarding the proposal to construct a barrage across Tommycut Creek. Members will recall that, at the time, I said that it was a high-risk project. To further clarify that, I referred to it as `the mother of all barrages'. That was an attempt to ensure that people like the member for Fannie Bay understood that it had a very high risk. Clearly, the message did not arrive or, if it did, the computer failed.

Ms Martin: Engineering specifications?

Mr REED: There were no engineering specifications.

Members interjecting.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!
