Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs PADGHAM-PURICH - 1996-02-27

I am aware that the Stock Squad has been reformed. What prompted this reformation? Was it an acknowledged increase in cattle duffing or a call from the pastoral industry? What is the budget and how many police personnel are in the Stock Squad? Is there a place in it for the mounted police detachment?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I am sure the member for Nelson will be pleased, as will members opposite and Territorians generally, to hear that the Minister for Police does not involve himself in the day-to-day management of the Northern Territory Police Force, contrary to what occurs in other places.

Mr Ah Kit interjecting.

Mr STONE: The member for Arnhem laughs. He thinks it is some sort of a joke. He would rather have the Minister for Police with his fingers in there.

We have seen what happens in other places. We saw what happened in Western Australia. We have seen what happened in New South Wales and in Queensland. It does not happen here. In the Territory, the day-to-day management and the conduct of the police force is a matter for the Commissioner of Police, and rightly so. It does not become the member for Arnhem to treat this as a joke. Successive CLP governments have always allowed police to get on with the job. I understand that the Stock Squad is being re-resourced and reformed. I am happy to provide the member with a detailed briefing on the logistics of what is happening. I will arrange that during the course of these sittings.
