Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STIRLING - 1994-08-25

The Auditor-General's report, which was tabled this week, stated that 6 out of 18 positions were vacant in the Internal Audit Bureau. The Auditor-General stated also that the demand for internal audit services had increased to the point where the bureau may have difficulty servicing departmental requests. What action has been taken to correct this unacceptable situation and ensure that it does not recur?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I will have to take the substance of the member's question on notice, but I can assure him that I will provide a response during the course of these sittings, if not later today. I have perused the comments of the Auditor-General in relation to the Internal Audit Bureau of the Department of the Chief Minister, and I note that there are a number of vacant positions. The Internal Audit Bureau does some excellent work in the government. It is a resource for government departments and authorities whereby its auditors examine their systems and recommend improvements. It is an independent service that is well-used, as the member mentioned, and well-appreciated. We all benefit from the services of this organisation. I will inquire as to whether the unfilled positions are causing the unit to delay responding to requests for further internal audit investigations, and ensure that it is resourced appropriately.
