Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr EDE - 1994-06-28

Did the Chief Minister have any prior knowledge of the decision to undertake the defamatory telephone calls made by Apex Polling for the CLP in the seats of Wanguri, Jingili and Millner immediately before the election? At what stage did the Chief Minister become aware of the Apex polling? Who commissioned the telephone calls that were made by that polling group? Does the Chief Minister condone this unlawful and unconscionable behaviour?

ANSWER

If the Leader of the Opposition is talking about unlawful behaviour, I thought that he would have taken action in regard to such suggestions.

Mr Ede: Defamation is unlawful.

Mr PERRON: I do not have a great deal of information about this matter because, although opposition members talk about it continually, everyone else is a little confused about what it is that they are talking about. However, my understanding is that the firm to which the opposition refers was never engaged to do any work by the Country Liberal Party.

Mr Ede: Are you suggesting that it did it simply out of the goodness of its heart?

Mr PERRON: Other than that, I suggest that such questions ought to be referred to the Chairman of the Country Liberal Party.
