Mr Speaker, I remind the minister and other members that many Territorians have extremely poor eye health status. Can the minister explain why the Registrar Ophthalmologist from the Royal Darwin Hospital has been withdrawn? Why has the ophthalmologist position, which was promised in March 1994, not been filled? Why has the number of specialist Aboriginal eye health workers been run down from 4 to 1? Why has the eye health service to Katherine virtually ceased, leaving more than 120 patients awaiting operations?
ANSWER
The member would be aware that, by necessity unfortunately, services vary with the availability of specialists and other professional staff in a particular area. To ensure that she receives a complete answer in relation to these matters, I will seek further information in addition to that which I have available at present and provide it to her during the course of these sittings.
