Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr RIOLI - 1994-10-05

Mr Speaker, I seek leave to table a letter from the Urapuntja Health Clinic. The letter states that it is servicing 800 people and has some of the worst health statistics in the nation. The health clinic advises that it has no benches for patients to sit on, no stools for doing dressings, no telephone contact with neighbouring clinics and that toilet facilities are inadequate as are basic diagnostic tools such as scales, clocks and auriscopes.

Leave granted.

How can the Chief Minister's government justify the expenditure of $170m on lavish jarrah and marble furniture and finishes and expensive crockery when health clinics lack these basic supplies?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, the honourable member seeks to perpetuate mistruths in regard to the cost of the very building that we are enjoying the luxury of at present. However, it may be that, at

the back of his mind, he has a genuine concern that he wishes to raise about the subject he has introduced in such a frivolous manner. I suggest to him, therefore, that I am happy to take on board his question which properly should have been directed to the Minister for Health and Community Services. I will ask for a report on the particular health clinic to which he refers and I will be pleased to respond to him as may be appropriate, either in this Chamber or through correspondence. I propose to treat the matter seriously which apparently he does not want to do.
