Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr TOYNE - 1997-02-26

Will he confirm that an urgent review of Training Network NT has begun, and that this review is a farce because the Northern Territory Employment and Training Authority is currently negotiating with Northern Territory University and other bodies to palm off bits of the network to them?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, what absolute nonsense! If the honourable member would accept a briefing on it, he would know that the network is there to facilitate external providers to deliver services as acknowledged and identified by the local community. Northern Territory University provides about 50% of the vocational programs for the whole of the Northern Territory, not simply from the Casuarina and Palmerston campuses, but right throughout the Northern Territory. The only review that is occurring at the moment in relation to the network is to ascertain how it might operate more effectively and efficiently on behalf of the local communities. That is not a big deal. It is nothing more than a normal process.

Components of the network are doing a good job, some of them better than others. In the end, those facilities will be used to full advantage. I am not sure whether the member for Stuart has had a briefing on NTETA or on the network itself. If he has, he has obviously missed the plot. However, I welcome him to return for a second chance. He should leave his computer behind because surfing the Internet will not help him on this one.
