Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr SETTER - 1995-11-22

Will the minister advise on developments in research to reduce the spread of malaria in the Northern Territory and neighbouring regions?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, this question concerns another very positive health development in the Northern Territory, and it is one that is a matter of mutual interest to ourselves and our Indonesian neighbours. A research project is to be undertaken by the Menzies School of Health Research. The project will involve not only an expert in this area from Australia but also a medical researcher from Indonesia. $140 000 is to be spent each year for 5 years. The corporate sector is interested also in becoming involved in the project. We are a long way from a level of comfort in relation to malaria and tuberculosis, the 2 diseases which are to be the principal targets of this research program. Given the collaborative approach between the Menzies school and medical officers in Timor, the outcome could be quite extraordinary. In total, some $700 000 is to be spent. The initiative will provide potential opportunities to obtain supplementary or continuation funding from international agencies such as AusAID and the World Bank. It is another great initiative for the Territory.
