Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STONE - 1997-02-25

Mr STONE (Chief Minister): Mr Speaker, I provide some additional information for the benefit of Territorians in relation to police and communications. The Leader of the Opposition claimed in her question that the majority of those personnel were auxiliaries. That is untrue. There are 41 personnel involved throughout the Northern Territory in communications. Of those, 30 are based in Darwin and 11 in Alice Springs. Of the 30 in Darwin, 16 are auxiliaries and 14 others are general-duties sergeants and constables. In Alice Springs, 11 general-duties constables are rostered in the communications area. It was misleading of the Leader of the Opposition to claim the majority of them are auxiliaries. They are not.
