Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BAILEY - 1994-12-01

On 19 August 1993, when discussing an amendment bill to provide the power to conduct the Cannonball Run, the minister said that events such as the Finke Desert Race are held under Confederation of Australia Motor Sports racing rules which have penalties in relation to directions and all kinds of other requirements. By way of interjection, I said that the Cannonball Run would not be. The minister then informed the House that the Cannonball Run would be conducted 'under CAMS racing rules'. I asked him whether the entrants would have competition licences. The minister replied that there would be all of those requirements. Was the minister misinformed about the race or did he misinform this Chamber?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I am quite pleased that opposition members are behaving like this because the community in general knows of the event's benefits. They enjoyed it. They participated either as spectators or people assisting, and everyone in the Territory was very disappointed by the tragedy that occurred. All Territorians whom I have met and spoken to about this event are very keen to see it continue. They are aware of the extremely professional way in which it was run and the detailed organisation that went into it. They are aware also that a coronial inquiry into the tragedy will sort out all these questions.

When introducing the bill, I informed members that the event was to be held under the CAMS imprimatur, and it was. I assumed that licences would be issued. I still do not

know whether they were or were not, because there are provisions for interim licences for particular events under CAMS. If I was incorrect, so be it. I apologise. The point is that members opposite bag anything that is good for the Territory and our community.
