Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BAILEY - 1994-12-01

Mr Speaker, I refer the Chief Minister to his reply to a question from the member for Karama about the costs of the Cannonball Run. The checkpoint where the fatal accident occurred appeared to be on a newly-built, third lane lay-by. Was this lay-by built specifically for the Cannonball Run and, if so, at what cost? Why didn't the Chief Minister include it in the costs that he tabled in this Assembly? Were there any other items like this that the Chief Minister failed to include in his reply in relation to the costs of the Cannonball Run?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, the list of costs that I provided to the Assembly came with some explanation as to what they were but, as that question was answered some months ago, I do not recall the detail. However, in relation to the lay-by adjacent to the checkpoint where the tragic accident occurred, as the member knows if he travels up and down the track, such lay-bys are not uncommon.

Mr Bailey: A third lane of bitumen along the side of the road?

Members interjecting.

Mr Bailey: No, that is definitely a new one.

Mr PERRON: It is a new one. I am saying that they are not uncommon.

Mr Bailey: They are off the road.

Members interjecting.

Mr SPEAKER: Order! The member for Wanguri asked a question, and I would very much like him to allow the Chief Minister to answer it.

Mr PERRON: I appreciate that the member is talking about a strip of bitumen alongside the road that provides a third lane for vehicles to pull off the road. Usually, they are fairly long and exist for the likes of trucks etc. They are not uncommon along the Stuart Highway, I can assure him. Thus, whilst it was a newly-constructed lay-by, I can

assure him that it is part of the infrastructure of the Northern Territory which will remain for the use of travelling ...

Mr Bailey: It is not a parking bay and it is not a pull-over lane for passing.

Mr PERRON: I have provided the member with the answer. If he is not happy with it I feel sorry for him, but that is the answer.
