Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs BRAHAM - 1995-08-22

I believe the Tanami Network is to be used in the Territory's satellite palliative care education course. Can the minister advise the House on the progress of this initiative?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, this is another exciting and positive initiative by the Territory's Department of Health Services. For the last 4 weeks, through the Tanami Network, some 40 participants have tapped into a program aimed at improving the palliative care knowledge and experience of Aboriginal health workers, doctors, nurses and community care staff. The program has provided 4 one-hour lectures on pain management, symptom control, psychosocial issues and nursing care. They have been broadcast from the College Hospice in Perth, which has been operating for about 10 years. Those lectures are being delivered to audiences in Alice Springs, Katherine, Yuendumu and Darwin ...

Mr Ede: By the Tanami Network!

Mr FINCH: By the Tanami Network, it must be acknowledged.

The difficulty is that the network covers only those areas. Therefore, the full course will be sent out on video to Jabiru, Nhulunbuy and other centres to enable other people to benefit. The program has been very well received. In fact, as it was oversubscribed, we will have to run a similar program in the near future. As I said, the demand exceeded the number of available placements. Being a Territory Department of Health Services' initiative, it was funded by and credited to the community health program, although the funding originated from the Commonwealth government. That has been put to very good use. This is another step in enhancing further the delivery of palliative care in the Northern Territory, which we will hear more about later.
