Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BELL - 1995-05-25

Can the Chief Minister confirm that there was no Cabinet authorisation for the grant of police powers to council employees, as the Minister for Health and Community Services announced?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I do not respond to questions about what goes on in Cabinet or is contained in Cabinet ...

Mr Bell: That is what you are here for. This is Question Time, Marshall. Do you think the police powers are a good idea?

Mr PERRON: Until now, I had been enjoying my last Question Time.

Unless Cabinet makes a decision that involves the release of information to the public for some reason, then one would not talk usually about what transpires in Cabinet.

I should say on my departing - I have to have a shot at all of my colleagues here - that I think that I am the only person in the House who pronounces properly the name of the honourable member's electorate.

Mr Bell: MacDonnell.

Mr PERRON: Most put a `d' on the end of it. It has saddened me repeatedly when I have heard it over the years. I am getting old and cranky, I guess. I take this opportunity to raise that matter - not as advice to the member for MacDonnell, because I am sure that he knows how to pronounce the name of his electorate - but for all other members. However, I digress, Mr Speaker.

I assure the member for MacDonnell that the Minister for Health and Community Services has the absolute support of both the Cabinet and the parliamentary wing for his measures, attempts and initiatives to address the socially-disruptive problems in our urban areas.
