Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BAILEY - 1996-11-28

In view of the serious breaches of privacy that have occurred in successive Country Liberal Party election campaigns, why has he failed to introduce the privacy bill that he promised?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I have never promised to introduce a privacy bill.

Mr Bailey: It is policy.

Mr STONE: It is now a policy, is it? This is the problem with the Labor Party in the Northern Territory. The member for Wanguri asks a question about a bill and then, after sitting down, he realises he has made a mess of it. He interjects that he meant `policy'. He is simply beyond the pale.

I can tell him that we have undertaken extensive work on the privacy issue. In fact, I spoke with Fred McCue on 8DDD in relation to it and it certainly ...

Mr Bailey: You said you would introduce something during these sittings. Where is it?

Mr STONE: Would you let me answer the question? I indicated that it was my intention to introduce a paper on privacy.
