Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr EDE - 1995-02-28

It is hardly surprising that, following his failure to apologise for bringing the filthy tactic of push-polling into Australia, the Chief Minister can maintain the line that he and his party do not know who was the fairy godmother - or should we say the wicked witch - who donated the push-polling. The Chief Minister said that no dirt is filthy enough. In answer to the previous question on this subject, he said that it caused him some amusement. Will he give a commitment to this Assembly that he will sponsor an amendment to the Electoral Act - or support an amendment from me - banning the disgusting tactic of push-polling from the Northern Territory forever?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition is well aware that he is free to introduce any legislation that he cares to on a General Business day. If he wishes to curtail the campaign materials and avenues of political parties further than they are restricted at present, he is free to draw up a particular set of rules and introduce it for debate on the floor of this House.
