Mrs HICKEY - 1994-10-12

Yesterday, the Chief Minister told this House: 'Firstly, Aquascene is operated virtually entirely by my wife, and it is operated well'. Why is it that every time the opposition asks Questions about Aquascene, the Chief Minister tries to shield himself behind his wife?

Mr Bailey: Go and say that to Mrs Perron!

Mr Coulter: In fact, his missus has been saying that too.

Mrs HICKEY: Mr Speaker, I seek leave to table the last 4 years' company returns of Aquascene lodged with the Australian Securities Commission.

Leave granted.

Mrs HICKEY: If Aquascene is operated by his wife, can the Chief Minister explain why he alone has signed the annual returns of Aquascene for the last 4 years?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, in response to the member's first point about my wife running the business and my wanting to shield myself behind her, I guess I can say only that, behind every successful woman there is a strong and supportive husband. Thus, I have to claim some credit ...

Mr Ede: You sign the annual reports.

Mr PERRON: I have to assume some credit for that success through my support of her in her endeavours. As I understand the situation with company returns to the Australian Securities Commission, they can be signed by any director.

Mr Ede: For 4 years, it has been you.

Mr Bailey: It happens always to be you.

Mr Stone: Whoopee-do! So what?

Mr Ede: That means that he is the major effective operator.

Mr Stone: He is a director.

Mr PERRON: Perhaps members opposite could indicate the point that they are making.

Members interjecting.

Mr Ede: So the 4 years is a coincidence?
