Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BALCH - 1998-10-07

As we well know, the Territory government is committed to fostering business growth and development and provides valuable support for industry. I understand that this is October Business Month. Can the minister advise what activities are planned for this month?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, October is designated Business Month, but I think it is important that we recognise that by offering the development of our businesses in the Territory we are helping to create new jobs and to promote the Northern Territory and its products and services. That is why, every year since 1994, this government, through the Department of Asian Relations, Trade and Industry, has hosted a month long process of festivals or business events to give Territory businesses access to the best information available. The October Business Month features seminars, workshops and events that are conducted right throughout the Northern Territory in regional centres such as Tennant Creek, Katherine, Nhulunbuy, as well as Alice Springs and Darwin. Those events are focused on topics, such as electronic commerce, women in business, taxation, youth initiatives, management of the year 2000, getting into export, business planning, bookkeeping, costing, quoting, contracting, tourism, intellectual property and matters such as that. They are presented in seminars and events right throughout the month. Those events have been put together to assist business to take advantage of the business opportunities which exist both in the Northern Territory and also beyond the Territory’s borders.

The fact that last year 2500 people attended workshops and seminars during the month shows that there is a keen interest in our business community. The month itself was launched with a business breakfast in Alice Springs, followed by a gathering at Universal Engineering in Darwin that afternoon to launch the Darwin segment. There were some very interesting speakers at the seminar that evening, including the winners of the Telstra Northern Territory Government Small Business Awards, as well as Miss Gayle Austin who was the national winner of the Telstra Business Woman of the Year for 1997. She certainly is somebody who just inspires business people to lift the bar much higher in terms of what they are aiming for.

I think that the fact the government is strongly involved in providing these opportunities for businesses is indicative of our approach to ensure that we create the best environment we can and provide the most assistance we can to Territory businesses in order that jobs can be created for young Territorians. This government will continue in its endeavours to ensure that young Territorians have the opportunities the potential of the Territory can offer them.
