Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BALCH - 2000-10-12

My question relates to the start this weekend of the new season of the Northern Territory Football League. I ask whether you know of any progress by the NTFL to secure major sponsorship arrangements to take the Territory’s premier sport to new levels in the season ahead?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I thank the member for Jingili for his question. I know he is keenly interested in all matters affecting sport, as it is adjacent to his electorate and through his electorate. I am pleased to announce that the Aussie Rules season actually starts this Saturday, and many Territorians are very keen followers of Aussie Rules Football in the Territory.

Now, the NTFL - and I was out there only just a week ago having a discussion with them and looking at their grounds and discussing the coming season with them -and I am aware they have a few problems. The Marrara football grounds, Football Park, is now nearly 10 years old and does need some attention. So I am very pleased to be advised by the NTFL that they are on the verge of accepting a lucrative new sponsorship deal from Telstra. I understand the figure is of the order of six figures. This will be per annum for the coming three years, and the announcement will be made jointly by the NTFL and Telstra at Football Park almost as we speak.

I congratulate the NTFL for being proactive and for getting the private sector involved. It is well known that the Northern Territory government fosters, promotes and assists sport throughout the Territory and is keen to go on to do that. But I welcome the involvement of the private sector in this particular aspect of sport. I know it is followed keenly by many Territorians and I wish them a marvellous season to come.
