Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr HATTON - 2000-11-28

Ms Martin: You haven’t been seen for ages around your office.

Mr SPEAKER: Order!

Mr HATTON: As a number of people would be aware, particularly those in the sporting community - presumably that does not include the member for Fannie Bay, otherwise she would listen to the question - earlier this year it was announced that the director of the Northern Territory Institute of Sport was finishing up in that position. The sporting community have been waiting with some anticipation for the replacement of the director. Could the minister advise who might become the new director of the Northern Territory Institute of Sport?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I welcome the question from the member for Nightcliff and record for the benefit of the House his original involvement in setting up the Northern Territory Institute of Sport.

Earlier this year my department did advertise for a new director of the Institute of Sport and we had a blue-ribbon field apply. I am pleased to announce that Mr Lindsay Ellis from the Queensland Academy of Sport has been appointed to this position. He comes to us with several strengths and a raft of skills, including sports administration and medicine, talent identification and development, strength and conditioning, strength science, athlete education, physiology, and biomechanics. He is well qualified to take up the position. We believe he will bring some strengths to the Northern Territory and I congratulate him on his appointment.
