Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs HICKEY - 1998-11-26

I seek leave to table a copy of the contract the government entered into with Mark Textor to conduct voter opinion polling in the lead up to the 1994 Territory election.

Leave granted.

MrsHICKEY: Mark Textor’s reward for this voter opinion research was $740 a day from the public purse. Will the Chief Minister now table all the reports prepared by Mr Textor? Will the Chief Minister confirm the practice he set up in 1990 was again implemented in 1993 to provide the Country Liberal Party with voter opinion research at taxpayers’ expense?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, I would expect that the polling company, or the marketing company, that did work for government would have a contract and that’s what this is. You would expect that to be proper process, and in fact I note it has been signed off by Peter Conran. Are you alleging he is part of this evil plot, this evil conspiracy as well?

When you go back and look at the research, it ranges across a number of issues that government is legitimately entitled to inquire about. You still don’t make your point, and I reject emphatically that I have ever put in place any such arrangement. It’s not true. If you are going to demonstrate it’s true, you had better have a lot more than this, than the ramblings of a lunatic like Andrew Coward.
