Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STIRLING - 2000-05-09

This government often trumpets the rhetoric of accountability, but no information on judicial contracts have been tabled in this Assembly in 10 years. Will the Chief Minister and Attorney-General table such details on the remuneration, allowances and other benefits of judges for the past 10 years and magistrates for the past 2 years, prior to the end of these sittings of parliament, so that Territorians can be assured that the independence and impartiality of the rest of the judiciary has not been compromised by the actions of this incompetent government?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, first of all, it should be said at the outset that the member for Nhulunbuy is accusing the government of setting in turn contracts that can compromise the integrity and independence of the judiciary. I would remind honourable members that that certainly is not the case in my opinion. The issue of the terms of one particular appointment is presently before the court. The government supports that approach and looks forward to the outcome of that decision in that regard.

With regards to a general publishing of all remuneration appointments for judges and magistrates, in general terms they would be available through the Government Gazette, I would think. But I will take the question on notice.
