Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr RIOLI - 1998-10-13

Last year the Territory’s Coroner described the former Chief Forensic Pathologist, Dr Kevin Lee as and I quote, ‘one of the best in Australia, if not the world’.

Recently the Country Liberal Party administration forced Dr Lee to leave Territory Health Services. He was told by hospital management his standards were too high for the Territory.

Does the minister stand by these words of hospital management and will the minister institute a public inquiry into why, and how, Kevin Lee was forced out?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, firstly, there won’t be any public inquiry. The termination of Dr Lee was under mutually agreeable arrangements between the management of Darwin Private Hospital and himself. I can provide the member with a full briefing at any time with regards to that issue.
