Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr TOYNE - 1999-02-16

Will you commit your government to negotiating, in good faith, comprehensive settlements for native title claims in Darwin and Alice Springs?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I will commit my government in good faith to implement the Wik 10-point plan that was agreed to by both houses of parliament. I would take the opportunity here to implore the opposition to think about their opposition to the final amendments that we are asking to be approved in this particular parliamentary session. They are important for the Northern Territory. They do give the Northern Territory the right to create legislation that accords with the 10-point plan. I believe that if we could somehow get past that particular impasse we would then have a real opportunity to move forward in land development and the improvement of Aboriginal welfare in the Northern Territory.
