Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr TOYNE - 1998-04-30

In addition to the report on the crisis in allied health services in central Australia which the minister tried to fob off last week, the Country Liberal Party government has been informed about this crisis many times. It received the Mobility Equipment Scheme Report in 1993, the Adult Guardianship Review Report in 1994, the HACC Training Program Review Report in 1993, and the Central Australian Aged Care 3-Year Strategic Plan in 1997. Earlier this year, the minister received a further report by Anne Bent into allied health in central Australia. Madam Speaker, I seek leave to table a copy of that report.

Leave granted.

Mr TOYNE: All those reports make it plain that action is needed desperately. Why has the minister done nothing?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, with reference to efforts in health in Alice Springs and elsewhere in the Territory, may I pay tribute to Dorothy Mackerras who is present here this morning. She has just released, through the Menzies School of Health Research, an evaluation of our Strong Women, Strong Babies, Strong Culture program. I spoke about that in the Chamber yesterday. It is a great honour for me to pay tribute to the excellent work she has done. It has been through her work that we have now extended that program throughout the Northern Territory with a 400% increase in its budget. That, along with other areas the member mentioned, will receive equal and increased attention throughout the coming year.
