Mr STIRLING - 2000-11-30

Judy Retter has accused the Chief Minister’s representative in the Barkly, CLP candidate Bill Cross, of thieving towels from her establishment. Ms Retter, herself a CLP member, in today’s Australian said:

Who in their right mind’s going to vote for someone who is such a germ that they’re going to pinch towels from an itty-bitty, tiny little business like mine?

Ms Retter said she had contacted the CLP hierarchy and given Mr Cross numerous warnings during the past nine months, but nothing happened.

He called me on Tuesday trying to slime to me, but I said: ‘Don’t get friendly with me, sport - just get me my friggin’ towels back’.

Do you think it is acceptable that the man who represents you as a senior employee can commit property offences? What action have you taken or will you take to ensure the law is applied evenly to all Territorians? Or are CLP candidates and your representatives above the law?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, if the circumstances were such as in the fairy tale the member just wove, I imagine there would be a report or a complaint to the police. My understanding – I have only quickly been apprised of the report – is that towels went missing because in the person’s mind there was some oversight. Money has been paid to compensate the owner and that is the end of it.
