Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr TOYNE - 1998-10-13

Madam Speaker, my question without notice is directed to the Minister for Health. The Chairman of the Royal Australasian College of Pathologists and Forensic Committee is warning of miscarriages of justice because of the woeful state of forensic services under the Country Liberal Party. He has expressed great concern over the current arrangements whereby services are being downgraded and samples have to be sent interstate for investigation. I ask the minister, how have you let this happen, and what are you going to do about it?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, I can assure the House that forensic services in the Northern Territory are in good shape. If the honourable member seeks reassurance on this issue, he should speak to the Coroner or any member of the Coroner’s staff. Pathology services are being provided in an adequate manner with sufficient staff. The issue the member is trying to explore is the issue of the termination of Dr Lee, and as I have said before, I do not intend to pursue that issue in this Chamber and in this forum.
