Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Ms MARTIN - 1997-12-04

Mr MANZIE (Asian Relations, Trade and Industry): Madam Speaker, I wish to provide further explanation in response to a question that was asked during Question Time on the work done by Mr Setter on behalf of the government. I can inform members that Mr Setter has acted as a special representative on 2 occasions. One was as the Australian chairman of the agricultural sector group of the Australian-Indonesian Development Area at a meeting in Jakarta on 28 October, and the other was at the Kupang Expo in November. As I said, Mr Setter does not receive a salary. However, he is reimbursed at a rate of $400 plus accommodation costs per day or, if travelling, at a standard rate of $200 per day. I reiterate that Mr Setter is eminently qualified to represent the government and the people of the Territory. In fact, at present, he is attending an intensive language course ...

Mr Bailey: He is not being paid? $400 a day and he is not being paid!

Madam SPEAKER: Order! Member for Wanguri.

Mr MANZIE: At present, at his own cost, he is attending an intensive language course in Denpasar. That is typical of ...

Mr Bailey: Other than being treated like a mushroom, he has no relevance to agricultural issues.

Mr Poole: He has done much more for the Territory than you have.

Madam SPEAKER: Order!

Mr MANZIE: That is typical of the commitment that Mr Setter has shown to representing Territory interests in Indonesia. Members opposite would do well if they put half the time and effort into trying to create jobs for Territorians that they spend in carrying on with the sort of rubbish that they pursue in this House. Their behaviour this morning has been despicable. I think all Territorians should be aware that this sort of behaviour is why these people are where they are.
