Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs BRAHAM - 2001-02-20

I am pleased to hear that you were able to extract more money from the Prime Minister; I only wish it was a bit more. My question is about waste of taxpayers’ money and a very blatant waste of taxpayers’ money.

The premises next to your office in Alice Springs have been vacant since the end of July when Territory Mutual moved out. You have been paying rent on this vacant empty office space since the beginning of August. I add that these premises are also owned by the Vice-President of the CLP, Brendan Heenan.

It seems to me this a very blatant waste of taxpayers’ money. Do you intend to occupy these premises or do you intend to continue to pay when so far the cost to the taxpayer has been approximately $17 000 for this empty office space?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, the question didn’t address how long we have been paying rent for those particular premises, or who actually occupied them. As I recall, plans were being drawn up with regards to the former minister’s office which was co-located almost next to the Chief Minister’s office in Alice Springs. Those plans have not been developed, but I am happy to take the question on notice and give further advice.
