Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STIRLING - 1997-12-04

Is it not a fact that one of the most likely places for a homosexual attack is in prison? Is it not a fact that the CLP government puts 17-year-olds in adult prisons? If the Deputy Chief Minister is truly worried about 17-year-olds being preyed upon, how does he reconcile that with putting 17-year-olds at risk in adult prisons?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, I think that the honourable member has been in the House long enough to know that a question pertaining to prison matters should be directed to the Minister for Correctional Services.

Ms Martin: The police minister.

Mr REED: The Minister for Police is not responsible for the management of our prisons. Even the member for Fannie Bay has been in this House long enough to know to whom such a question should be directed. I suggest that, if the honourable member wants to ask that question, he direct it to the appropriate minister.

Mr BAILEY: A point of order, Madam Speaker! I cannot find the standing order immediately but, where a minister is involved in a matter of public interest, it is quite appropriate that questions be asked in that area where he has carriage of the public interest. He is the member who has raised for debate the issue of 17-year-olds being pursued by people and therefore it relates to a matter in the public interest.

Madam SPEAKER: Questions should be directed to the minister responsible for the particular matter. There is no point of order.
