Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr DUNHAM - 1998-04-21

With a record wet season behind us, it is anticipated that mosquitoes could be in plague numbers in the northern suburbs of Darwin. What is being done to combat mosquito plagues?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, I take delight in informing the House and the media that work will start today at the Casuarina Coastal Reserve to eliminate mosquito breeding areas. That will incorporate filling in the depressions behind the sand dunes off Buffalo Creek and the beach reserve. This is a $200 000 project that is included in this financial year's capital works program for the Parks and Wildlife Commission. It is estimated that 10 000 m3 of sand will be required. That will be obtained by taking about 150 mm of sand from the beach below the low-water mark. The Department of Lands, Planning and Environment has had a beach monitoring program in place since 1989, and it is through that work that we will undertake the filling of the depressions.

I announce also that a community awareness program will be instigated. In particular, the Casuarina Coastal Reserve Landcare group will take part in the process of monitoring the ongoing works. I take this opportunity to invite all members and the media to come on site today at 12.30 at the reserve to view the commencement of these works.
