Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr AH KIT - 2000-10-18

The Chin stone buildings in Cavanagh Street are more than a hundred years old and they are a most important part of Darwin’s Chinese history. They are not presently subject to any heritage protection. I ask the minister, has the Heritage Advisory Council made any recommendation regarding the listing of these old Chinese shops and, if so, does the minister intend to follow their recommendations?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, it is good to see the member for Arnhem asking a question at long last in these sittings.

To the best of my knowledge, in the term of my time as minister responsible for heritage, nothing has come forward on those particular buildings you are talking about. That is not to say that they have not been recommend and I can check on that. The issue here is, I assume without having the full knowledge in front of me, is that the owners do not wish those buildings to be protected and that would be one of the reasons that if they have been recommended that it has not been proceeded with. But I will check on those particular buildings and see what the actual status of them is.

Mr PALMER (Leader of Government Business): Mr Speaker, I would ask that further questions be placed on the Question Paper.
