Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs BRAHAM - 2001-06-05

Chief Minister, in April 1999, just two months after you became Chief Minister, you made a statement in the House that you would introduce legislation covering access to information and privacy. Two years later, you still not have not introduced this legislation and the Northern Territory is the only jurisdiction in Australian that does not have FOI. Chief Minister, when are you going to give Territorians the same rights as other Australians and introduce FOI?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, members would be aware that I gave that undertaking. There has been a great deal of work conducted and legislation introduced in part to achieve that aim. The remaining package of access to information legislation has been considered by Cabinet. Cabinet has some questions that they have raised. That legislation will return to Cabinet, I believe, and in due course will be introduced to this House.
