Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs HICKEY - 1998-12-01

Madam Speaker, I seek leave to table a copy of a letter dated 19 April 1993 from Mark Textor to Paul Cowdy. I make a copy of that available to the Chief Minister.

Leave granted.

Mrs HICKEY: He has worked out his defence for 1990. Now we will move on to 1993. The letter refers to research Textor is conducting under his $740-a-day contract with the government which I tabled on the last sitting day of last week. In the letter Textor refers to the qualitative research he is conducting on the views of Territorians between the ages of 20 and 35. He says he will finish the research on 21 April.

Is it the case that Paul Cowdy has worked as the Chief Minister’s senior political adviser since he became Chief Minister in 1995? Will he admit that these documents show that his personal senior political adviser, Paul Cowdy, was the person who facilitated this research?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, since the days when Mark Textor worked for the CLP, he has gone on to establish his own company. He works for a whole range of people, including the Liberal Party, and no doubt others who are involved in commercial endeavours throughout the nation. Mark Textor has been retained to undertake certain works that are of a qualitative or quantitative polling nature that is consistent with the function of government. What is wrong with that?
