Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr TOYNE - 1999-08-17

It is critical to the outcome of next year’s statehood vote that everyone understands precisely where the Chief Minister is headed with his proposal. Will a ‘yes’ vote guarantee that good-faith discussions will take place with Aboriginal Territorians to address the concerns raised at Kalkarindji and Batchelor, before and after the first statehood referendum?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, it is my intention that good-faith negotiations be conducted with Aboriginal Territorians on issues that concern them greatly, from this point onwards and throughout the process. That is certainly a central theme in any utterances I have made on the subject.
