Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr LUGG - 1998-12-02

One of the more visible construction projects around Darwin at the moment is the cruise ship passenger terminal being built at Stokes Hill Wharf. When is this building likely to be completed and the terminal put into use?

Mr Bailey interjecting.

Madam SPEAKER: Member for Wanguri, questions are to be asked in silence. Be quiet. Did you hear the question, minister?

Mr COULTER: Yes, barely. I get the gist of what he is talking about.

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, the cruise ship terminal is certainly an attractive project which on current indications looks like bringing benefits to Territory tourism. I congratulate the company, St Hilliers, who were awarded the contract last June to build the cruise ship terminal at a cost of $1.3m. We are looking at a completion date very early in the next calendar year. In fact, 26 January is the completion date that has been scheduled. Erection of the structural steel work is now complete and the installation of the wall panels is going on as we speak.

I have brought in for the information of honourable members a diagram showing what the cruise terminal will look like when it is completed. They can see that it blends in with the old infrastructure down there. I table that. There is a smaller one for the benefit of members who would like perhaps to photocopy it. It is very much a welcome facility down there. It has been a little uncomfortable for people travelling to and from cruise ships. To have a departure lounge of that standard will be an addition welcomed, I am sure, by the tourism industry and also by people using cruise liners coming in and out of Darwin Harbour. I am sure members will want to go down there and have a look at the completed facility. It is something that has been wanted for a long time on the wharf.
