Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STIRLING - 1999-10-20

I refer to the dangerous state of the hospital incinerator at Nhulunbuy. The incinerator at Gove District Hospital burns at such low temperatures that THS guidelines for the disposal of medical waste are breached. The incinerator burns at 600C when it is required to burn at 1100C. Only one of the original 2 burners operates. Ash from the incinerator falls over the hospital kitchen, the ward airconditioners, the laundry, and workers in the grounds. Will the minister explain why he has done nothing to fix this dangerously toxic situation?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, I will take the question on notice for a couple of reasons. The question expects me to answer in some detail, so I’ll seek a detailed briefing. The second reason I take it on notice is that Labor has a very sorry record here of standing up and making allegations that are untrue, merely to use the sound that goes from this House to the radio. I shall answer in full. I take the question on notice.
