Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mrs HICKEY - 1998-12-01

Last week, he justified his rip-off of Territory taxpayers in 1990 with the dodgy excuse that the Country Liberal Party paid its fair share by chipping in $3700 towards the $38 000 bill for the voter opinion research. Today I have tabled documents which show that, in 1993, the Country Liberal Party obtained purely political polling which included the popularity of individual politicians without paying a cent.

Can the Chief Minister show any evidence that this type of polling has been paid for by taxpayers in any other jurisdiction in Australia, and will he take action to repay the thousands of dollars which he, Cowdy and Textor have ripped off Territorians?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, I ask that the Leader of the Opposition withdraw the allegation of a ‘rip-off’. If she wants to have another go at this by way of a substantive motion, let her do it. She has not proved or demonstrated any of that. In any event, it is out of order to make the allegation.
