Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr LUGG - 1999-02-25

There are some rumours that the building industry is flagging a potential shortfall in the number of residential blocks in the Darwin and greater Darwin area. Can the minister advise members what further development of residential precincts are likely to be occurring this year?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, it gives me great pleasure today to be able to announce the development of a new suburb for Palmerston. I am sure that many members in the House are aware of, and that the member for Blain and the Chief Minister have seen, an enormous growth out there in Palmerston in recent years. It has been a real success story. Territorians are flocking there to buy their homes and get into investment there and watch their assets grow financially.

It is a real credit to see some of the areas like Moulden, Driver, Woodroofe, Durack, Bakewell and The Chase all progressing. The private sector has certainly thrown its money behind developments there. There are new cinemas going up, and sporting clubs and shopping centres coming out of the ground as we speak. Native title has been a real frustration for government in the areas where we have done our forward planning for future development, and that is the continuation of the suburbs of Rosebery and Bellamack. The best estimates for resolving the native title issues in those areas are at least 14 months out and it has been a frustration. Our forward planning has been excellent. The growth out there has been predicted pretty well but unfortunately we can’t progress into those areas.

I instructed my department some weeks ago to start planning for the release of further land so that we can ensure that development still progresses. We have identified some greenfield sites that we hope to have ready for release within the next 4 months or so to potential developers. It is envisaged that of the some 70 hectares we are looking at, we could come up with about 900 residential blocks which will see us good for the next few years, including some blocks for first homeowners so that those people can get into the market as well It is very encouraging to hear the news from the Minister for Housing today regarding HomeNorth.

The new suburb is going to be named Farrar after John Samuel Farrar, a bushman and pastoralist from the Nutwood Downs area, and a man of some renown from the late 1890s. I table maps that show the area that I am proposing, bounded by the old Stuart Highway and the new bypass Stuart Highway and, of course, Temple Terrace.

This is certainly good news for the economy. It is good news for people who wish to develop Palmerston and it is good news as far as jobs go. I look forward to the release later on this year of that land.
