Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Ms MARTIN - 1999-04-28

I ask the Treasurer to demonstrate his economic literacy, or ability to read budget papers, in this. I refer the Treasurer to page 133 of Budget Paper No. 3. In case he hasn’t got it there, I’d like it if someone can take it across to the Treasurer. This is from yesterday’s budget that he tabled. I ask the Treasurer to tell this House, do we have the highest domestic power charges in Australia?

Mr Coulter: There is a very obvious answer to your question, and it’s not - you’re not being smart here.

Mr Coulter: John Tobin says they’re wrong.

Mr SPEAKER: Order! Order! There is far too much comment across the Chamber. The Treasurer has the floor, and he’s addressing his remarks to myself. I can’t hear him. I would appreciate some silence. Thank you. The honourable the Treasurer.

Mr REED: I just ask the Leader of the Opposition not to be cute in her interpretation of the budget papers, and to take also into account the additional information that’s been provided to her by the honourable the minister responsible for the Power and Water Authority.

Members interjecting.

Mr Coulter: The budget papers are wrong! What a fool.

Mr REED: Read the papers and let it soak in, and I think you’d be able to provide an effective and honest response to the budget, rather than being rather emotive in the silly way that you’re trying to do it at the moment.
