Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STIRLING - 1999-06-02

I seek leave to table a copy of a leaked Cabinet submission on the Power and Water Authority.

Leave granted.

Mr STIRLING: This submission recommends that $5m of new charges be imposed on Power and Water Authority users to include increased fees for service extensions, meter testing and streetlight services. I ask the minister how much more will Territorians, who already pay the highest power prices in Australia, have to pay under these changes.

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, they’re a little late in delivering this particular one. In fact, this was leaked to Paul Everingham about 3 months ago and was a matter for great discussion on the ABC radio. In fact, Paul Everingham quoted from it. I just wonder whether Paul Everingham is perhaps slipping it to him now to allow it to come in here. This is not new. It was false then as it is now.

One option we were looking at was reducing the cost of street lighting, to allow Transport and Works and the Councils to take over street lighting and also the maintenance of it, which was one of the reform measures that were seriously being considered. So, that argument about that particular leaked document, which was leaked some time ago, none of those charges have been implemented nor is it our intention to implement them.
