Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr STIRLING - 1997-11-27

The headline on the front page of the Centralian Advocate reads: 'It's Jail for One-Legged Man'. This story highlights the mandatory imprisonment of a pensioner in Alice Springs. His crime was damaging a fence. At the same time, the Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment unlawfully damages heritage buildings, yet he still sits in this House without penalty. Does the Attorney-General agree that this shows exactly how much of a joke this government's sentencing laws have become?

ANSWER

Madam Speaker, this has to be one of the silliest questions ever asked in this Chamber. May I ask whether the member is making some inquiries to obtain the syllabus for me? Perhaps he could provide it to me before the end of Question Time.
