Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr BAILEY - 1999-04-29

Why haven’t funds been specifically set aside in the budget to advance the Territory along the road to statehood?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, for the simple reason that any issue with regard to continuing the process towards statehood is for this parliament to debate at an appropriate time. The report of the parliamentary committee investigating this matter has just been tabled in the House. It would be irresponsible to suggest a position from me, a position from government or a position from this House at this time, certainly with regard to how statehood could be advanced, and, in addition, whether or not funds should be allocated towards it.
