Department of the Legislative Assembly, Northern Territory Government

Mr RIOLI - 2001-02-20

Despite your protestation that higher fuel prices are not the fault of governments, isn’t it a fact that almost 50 in every $1 goes straight into the government coffers in fuel excise and GST? When is the Chief Minister going to stand up to his mate, the Prime Minister, John Howard, on behalf of Territorians, and demand a reduction in taxes, so that we can see cheaper prices at the fuel bowsers?

ANSWER

Mr Speaker, the fuel excise is 38. That goes to the Commonwealth coffers under a scheme introduced by the Labor Party. What the Howard government has done is return part of that excise in subsidies for on-road commercial diesel costs, something the Labor Party never thought to do.
